What does “live birth” mean?
Statistics Canada defines a live birth as the complete expulsion or extraction of a baby from the mother when, after separation, the baby shows evidence of life. Its national table organizes births by the mother's usual place of residence and also filters the place of occurrence to Canada.
That scope matters when comparing this figure with another source. A count based on the place where a birth occurred, a different geography, or a different reporting period may not match this series.
Why an older number can differ
If you saved a birth count from a previous edition of this guide, compare its release date with the one above. A table can contain the same reference year and a different published value after a revision. That is why a citation needs both the year being described and the version being consulted.
For a school assignment, research note or other reuse, save the source link and the date you accessed it with the value. Check the current table before describing a number as the latest.
Count, rate and household questions are different
This table answers a count question: how many recorded live births appear in the selected annual series? It is not a count of shopping households or a clothing budget.
If you need a fertility rate, a regional comparison or a household measure, start with the source designed for that question. Adding a different measure to this table without explaining its denominator would make the comparison harder to follow.
Similarly, a national count does not establish what one family should purchase. For practical preparation, the Canadian newborn clothing essentials guide addresses the wardrobe task separately.
A quick way to check the series
- Open the linked annual table and read its current release and footnotes.
- Select the same residence and occurrence geography before copying a value.
- Keep the reference year beside every number.
- Record whether the newest data are preliminary.
- Compare years from the same current table version.
This sequence is an editorial checking aid. It does not add an estimate or explain the cause of an annual change.
Questions about annual births
Are the 2025 figures final?
No. The latest release identifies 2025 data as preliminary and subject to later revision.
Which year is highest in this five-year table?
2021 is highest among the five rows shown. That comparison is limited to this selected period and current source version.
Why does a source give a different count for 2024?
Check its release date, geography and series. A previous edition may retain an earlier value. Use matched definitions and the same current version when comparing years.
